Google Bookmarks Adds Lists Feature for Social Bookmarking

June 15th, 2010

Google Bookmarks now includes an experimental feature (for English users) called Lists for privately saving links in buckets, sharing them with friends or publicly publishing them to the web. Coupled with the recent addition of stars in search, Google Bookmarks — an oft-ignored product — is a lot more useful.

Lists introduce the notion of social bookmarking to the Google (Google) service, which was previously a private bookmarking utility. There’s also an array of features — like list comments, in-line YouTube (YouTube) and content previews, recommended links and location features — included with lists.

What is new in ASP.NET 3.5

April 8th, 2010

Microsoft released ASP.NET 3.5 on November 19, 2007. Along with it, was released Visual Studio 2008. This evolution from ASP.NET 2.0 to ASP.NET 3.5 is quiet gradual. ASP.NET 3.5 uses the same engine as that of ASP.NET 2.0, with some extra features added on top of it.

Dot Net3.5

Added Features:
Language Integrated Queries (LINQ) Family of technologies that provides querying features for data,
From relational to XML Generate a LINQ object model that provides an object representation of the database
New collections: HashSet Peer-to-Peer networking framework Integration of WCF and WWF (Workflow Services)
New ASP.NET Data Controls and Extensions are added.

Some Important Points
1. ASP.NET 3.5 provides better support to IIS7. IIS7 and ASP.NET 3.5 modules and handlers support unified configuration.
2. You can have multiple versions of ASP.NET on the same machine.
3. For those who are wondering what happened to ASP.NET 3.0, well there isn’t anything called ASP.NET 3.0.
4. VS 2002 worked with ASP.NET 1.0, VS 2003 worked with ASP.NET 1.1, and VS 2005 worked with ASP.NET 2.0. However VS 2008 supports
multi-targeting, i.e it works with ASP.NET 2.0, and ASP.NET 3.5.

Zend Server 5.0 adds debugging for PHP

March 13th, 2010

By Alex Handy

PHP developers have a new way to track problems in their applications. Zend Server 5.0, released earlier this month, adds black box-like debugging capabilities to allow developers to track down issues within their PHP applications. The new version also adds a job queue for scheduling the execution of incoming user actions.

Eldad Maniv, vice president of products and marketing at Zend, said that the new debugging capabilities in Zend Server 5.0 are “very similar to black box recording. When a request goes to Zend Server, everything is recorded in that execution path. If something in a production environment misbehaves, then that is recorded, captured and a developer can look at it offline without needing to recreate the problem.”

Maniv said that Zend Server’s recording capabilities are “effective in environments where you cannot use debuggers. It can also be used in a development and testing environment. It speeds up the development process.”

The second major new feature in Zend Server 5.0 is the addition of a job queue. “It gives developers the ability to build an application where there is a need to respond very quickly, but there is a lot of processing that does not need to happen in real time,” said Maniv. “A request comes in, logic in the server addresses the thread, then queues off a PHP path for the PHP job to occur. This speeds up response time while still allowing these jobs to happen.”

Zend’s influence in the PHP community was recently challenged by Facebook’s release of HipHop for PHP, a compiler that builds PHP into C++. Facebook has also released a host of additional PHP tools, including parsers, lexors and a command-line interface for PHP.

Mike Gualtieri, senior analyst at Forrester, didn’t think that Facebook’s release of PHP tools will take away from Zend’s position as the top PHP company.

“What Facebook has done with HipHop is not relevant to most developers,” he said. “I think, short term, it’s going to make people feel more comfortable with PHP, knowing that Facebook has done that, knowing that there are people making it scale to that size. Google is a great example; they have all these different tools out there, but enterprises want a consistent set of tools. They don’t want to be confused by all these tools and figuring out if they will be supported in the future or not.

How PPC Search Engines Work

February 19th, 2010

By Tom Falco

The best way to market your websites these days is with pay-per-click search engines and the best of course is Overture, previously GoTo.com. Google is very good, too.

It seems that the major search engines are changing their rules daily and it is getting harder and harder to get your site listed. In many cases one must pay and that does not guarantee being placed at the top of any one category. But with Overture.com and other pay-per-click search engines, you can place yourself at the top and you regulate how much you want to spend per click. With a little experimentation, you can find out the best click through rates and the best terms to use. We sell custom printed promotional and party items. We noticed that when we placed our printed cups, matches, napkins, etc. under the category of “Retirement Parties,” we received lots of clicks, but no orders for retirement parties. When we placed the same items under “Proms,” “Family Reunions,” “High School Reunions,” and such, the orders were coming in like wildfire. So of course we removed our listing under “Retirement Parties” since it seemed that people were willing to click on our link out of curiosity, costing us money each time they clicked, yet they never placed orders.

With pay-per-click we were able to get many pages and items listed that on the regular search engines would not have been. On most search engines, we are at the top with Post-It Notes, Pens, and other items, but for the Reunion items or Party supplies we would never be raised to the top since that is not our major business. But through the pay-per-click engines, we are at the top in those categories and it has paid off very nicely. The best part of Overture.com is that they have major deals with Yahoo, MSN, and other major search engines, and the top three listings on Overture are actually carried over to the other search engines. So what you have on Overture is also on Yahoo, MSN, Ask Jeeves, Alta Vista and others at the same time. This is only for the three listings on each category. Google is partners with AOL among others.

This has helped with our 2002 Calendar promotion. We were able to place the printed calendars at the top of the search engines, which enabled us to sell out our entire stock! When they were sold out, we simply removed the listings. Listings start at only .05 per click, which isn’t bad. Depending on your listing and your business type, .05 could get you to the top in many categories. You can check your stats daily and see where the clicks are coming from and how many people are actually clicking on specific key words or links.

Calculation of Google PR

February 6th, 2010

Google Page Rank is simply Google’s way of displaying how important a
webpage is. Google assumes that when 1 webpage links to another webpage,
it’s actually “casting a vote” for the webpage. The more votes you have for your
webpage, the more important your webpage will be.

google-pagerank

why does it matter how Page Rank is calculated?

It matters because you can use this knowledge to actually funnel PR throughout your website and give different pages on your site a higher PR. The higher your PR is, the higher your webpage will rank in Google.

Here is the Google Page Rank Formula!!!

0.15 + (0.85*a share of PR of every web page that link to it)=> Your Webpage’s PR

0.15 = The lowest PR a webpage could ever possibly have.
0.85 = A dampening factor… This is just the number that Google uses for their PR formula.
1 “share” = the PR of the page linking to you divided by the total number of links on that page
